  • Spindown is a daemon that can spindown idle disks and so saving energy and giving the disks a longer lifetime. It works by checking how many blocks are read and written from the disks. When no blocks are read or written the disk is idle. When a disk stays idle long enough spindown uses sg_start to spin the disk down. It also works with usb disks and hotswappable disks because it doesn't watch the device name (hda, sdb, ...), but the device id. This means that it doesn't matter if the disk is swapped while the deamon is running.

Buffalo Linkstation/KuroBox kernel 2.6.* (PPC) discontinued

  • My kernel line for the Buffalo Linkstation HD-HLAN (LS1/PPC), Buffalo Linkstation HD-HGLAN (HG/PPC), Buffalo Linkstation HS-DGL (HS/PPC), KuroBox, KuroBox HG, and Terastation (HD-HTGL/PPC), from http://hvkls.dyndns.org/ has been discontinued.

    Mostly due to the lack of time, but also due to the decreasing number of PPC boxes, the fact Sylver is out, and I don't even use the latest kernel myself (I'm on variant-nfs), have made me think things over during my vacation.

    My line of kernel builds, starting IIRC with 2.6.15, will end with kernel 2.6.25.11/v110 — now. Security fixes to the Debian etch kernel (variant-legacy/variant-nfs) will be available.

    I would like to thank everyone for their trust, help, cooperation, donations, and their patience, as not everything went as smooth as I like it.

NFS-optimized kernel 2.6.18.8/ppc released

  • Since kernel 2.6.19, I cannot get NFS speeds > 8192, cause unknown, bad for dbox recordings. So I have compiled an NFS-optimized 2.6.18.8 with Debian patches and security fixes (2.6_2.6.18.dfsg.1-13etch5).

    In order to install this kernel, you must first install the usual kernel with my webinstaller, no reboot necessary. Thereafter, download and install the 2.6.18.8 modules plus the kernel you need (no other kernel; the HG version should work on Teras), from my archive directory. The command to install the kernel and modules is:

    tar -C / -xvzf kernel*nfs*tar.gz
    tar -C / -xvzf modules*nfs*tar.gz
    kernel26.sh

    Needless to say, further use of the webinstaller would overwrite this special kernel, so only use the dry run in the future until further notice.

    The AVR immunization code had to be removed for the time being, /dev/ttyS[01] were changed back to their Buffalo values.
    While the kernel itself can be used on all supported systems, there's still a LS1/HG type specify residue, the uboot .dtb file. uboot users must set either variant-us or variant-us. See the uboot instructions below for details.
